March 2008: Kelle JollyAge: 30
Location: Knoxville, TN
Occupation: Singer
Status: Engaged
Children:0Kelle relocated from Chattanooga to Knoxville, Tennessee about two years ago after teaching elementary music for a year and getting a divorce. After watching her father die from cancer, Kelle decided that she needed to take a risk on herself and what she loved: entertaining. So she changed her surroundings and changed her life. Now, she is co-hosting a local cable access show, acting on locally produced cable shows, hosting an internet radio show and performing live jazz and soul at major venues here with well attended audiences. Happily, she's sharing all this with her fiance, who she describes as "the love of my life." In whatever she does, Kelle works to encourage others to live fruitful lives by listening to God's instructions for our gifts. Her some of her beautiful music at: www.myspace.com/kellejolly
1. What is your biggest accomplishment?
My biggest accomplishment is not a tangible thing like a certificate or reward. I have been proving to myself that music has the power to bridge gaps. I've seen people of different backgrounds, races, economic levels, genders, cultures, and religions come together to appreciate the jazz, soul and spiritual music that I love to perform. Music is the lense that allows me to see the potential for humanity. I wish everyone could see that.
2. Name your favorite movie.
Coming to America is a movie I'll actually stop to watch. I prefer concert DVD's. My favorite concert DVD features Sara Vaughn.
3. Describe your personal diva style.
I like to be easy and comfortable. That's doesn't mean I wear a potato sack. If you looked in my closet you would see a mix of patterns, sequins, velvet and jeans. I even own two pairs of authentic cowboy boots! I love to buy retro dresses, then redesign them by trimming the hemline, lowering the neckline and slitting the sleeves.
4. What's the best piece of advice you've ever received?
"Sing while you're young, honey!"
5. You look mah-valous! What is your secret??
I like vegetables and vegetable juice. I also like to live in a peaceful household.
6. What's one dream you look forward to having come true?
I want to create music with my family. I hope my future children love music making as much as my fiance and I do. He is an amazing saxophone player with a great memory of jazz history.
7. If a movie were made about your life, what actress would play you and who would be your leading man?
I think the beautiful and talented Tracy Ross should play me because she has that "wild woman" hair. Lawrence Fishburne would play my fiance. They have the same ears and beard (sometimes).
8. What 3 adjectives would your best friend use to describe you?
Adventurous, jolly, generous.
9. What makeup/beauty essential can you absolutely positively not live without?
I don't wear a lot of make-up. But my hair is natural and it requires the right products for styling. I use Lottabody temporary straightener. It makes my hair easier to comb or twist. It works as a conditioner. The bottle lasts for a long time and you can put it on wet or dry hair.
10. What’s playing on your CD or MP3 player right now?
I listen to a lot of music online. Right now I love listening to rock & soul artist, Alice Smith. She's a young Black singer who was recently nominated for a grammy. She sounds like she grew up listening to the same music I did. You can find her music at www.myspace.com/alicesmith
11. What is one thing you wish more people knew about you?
I could have studied graphic design instead of music as an undergraduate student at South Carolina State University. But I had a music scholarship. And when I enrolled, they didn't have the art facilities that they have now.
12. What, in your opinion, is the formula for success?
Make choices out of love not fear. Surround yourself with people who agree with you and work to build each other up.
13. What motivates you?
The gifts that I have been blessed with are so much bigger than me.
It would be ungrateful of me if I chose not to share with people what God gave me to say and do.If you're not giving, you're not getting.14. Complete this sentence: "One year from now I would like to...
have The JollyBoy Network up and running as a music company that serves the community through awareness, education and performance. Also, this year I promised myself that I would be on as many media outlets as possible. I currently co-host a local cable access show called "What's Going On" with Robert Minter and an internet radio show at blogtalkradio.com/myjollyboynetwork. In a year I hope to see more growth.
15. Sum up your personal philosophy.
"Whether you believe you can do a thing or not, you are right." I think that is an Elenore Roosevelt quote. I found it in a magazine and I've been carrying it around since college. When I start to doubt myself, it reminds me that I don't want to be my biggest obstacle.
